To little surprise, Epix has renewed Godfather of Harlem for a third season. News of the renewal comes shortly after season two came to a close with an emotional cliffhanger. According to a report from Deadline, season two of the Forest Whitaker led series was Epix’s best-performing season of all time. Adding on, the season two finale was the network’s best performing finale episode to date.
“We’re thrilled to bring this extraordinary group of artists back together for season three of Godfather of Harlem,” ABC Signature President Jonnie Davis told Deadline.
“Forest Whitaker’s Bumpy Johnson is one of television’s great antiheroes and we can’t wait to see what the brilliant creative team led by Chris Brancato and Paul Eckstein have in store.”
Much of the main cast is expected to return. Viewers can expect to see Forest Whitaker as Bumpy Johnson, Nigel Thatch as Malcolm X, Vincent D’Onofrio as Vincent Gigante and Giancarlo Esposito as Adam Clayton Powell. Accompanying the visual production, Swiss Beatz will continue to put together a star-studded soundtrack for each episode.
“Season 3 will find Bumpy Johnson continuing to battle for control of Harlem, with other aspirants to the throne, namely the Cuban Mafia from neighboring Spanish Harlem. Taking on the Cuban mob will put Bumpy, his loved ones, and his community in the crosshairs of not only the rival Italians, but ruthless Latin assassins and, ultimately, the CIA,” the show’s description reads.
“Godfather of Harlem is a collision of the criminal underworld and the civil rights movement during one of the most tumultuous times in American history.”
Season three will likely debut in the summer of 2022.
