Super middleweight contender Edgar Berlanga is reportedly gearing up for a return to the ring in June. Boxing Scene has reported that Berlanga will share the ring with Alexis Angulo on June 11, 2022 at the Hulu Theater in New York, New York.
Berlanga last fought at the Hulu Theater on March 19, 2022. He edged out a unanimous decision against former middleweight title challenger Steve Rolls to earn the 19th win of his career. While he brought out the likes of Rowdy Rebel and Fat Joe, many critics raised some concerns with his the New York native’s inability to put pressure on Roll and potentially end the fight early.
“He seemed confused. He wasn’t sure how to be. He didn’t have an identity tonight. Normally he’s an aggressive guy. He comes forward, he’s swinging blows, he’s going back and forth, he wants to mix that action up. He didn’t seem to be that guy. He didn’t seem to be that killer tonight,” former welterweight champion Tim Bradley Jr. said, according to Boxing 24/7.
Despite concerns raised by fighters and critics, Berlanga and his team are excited about the future.
“Edgar Berlanga fought a tough, defensive fighter, and he got some valuable rounds in tonight. As you saw from the sold-out crowd, the kid is a star. There are many more big nights to come,” Top Rank’s Bob Arum said in March.
Berlanga enters the early summer bout with an unblemished record of 19-0 with 16 knockouts. Meanwhile, his opponent, Alexis Angulo, enters the bout with a record of 27-2 with 23 knockouts. Angulo’s two losses occurred in title fights against undefeated fighters, Gilberto Ramirez and David Benavidez. If Berlanga hopes to ascend to the top of the division, he must get by an experienced fighter such as Angulo.
