The North Carolina Tar Heels have made their first splash in the 2021 recruiting class. Dontrez Styles has committed in-state to Roy Williams and the Tar Heels. Styles is the top-ranked 2021 prospect in the state of North Carolina. He flew under the radar some until the 2019 John Wall Holiday Invitational where he shined playing against top recruits. Styles made his decision to commit shortly after the Tar Heels offered him a scholarship. He picked North Carolina over the Clemson Tigers, Maryland Terrapins, and North Carolina State Wolfpack.

North Carolina has a great track record with prospects from Kinston High School. The 2021 recruiting class will likely be considerably smaller for North Carolina compared to the 2020 recruiting class. There are currently five players in the 2020 recruiting class and one more could be added to it before Roy Williams wraps up the class. It is possible that none of those players jump to the NBA after one season. The only guarantees about the roster after next season are Garrison Brooks and Andrew Platek will be out of eligibility.
Styles is an ideal recruit for Roy Williams and should spend multiple years with the program. He is currently ranked as the 57th best recruit in the 2021 class, but that should go up some as he continues to play in high school. There may only be two or three spots on the Tar Heel’s roster in the 2021 class. Styles is a great start to this class and should be on the roster for three or four years. His role on the team may be limited at first, but his value long term should help him become a Tar Heel fan favorite.
