The Houston Texans have hired San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans as their next Head Coach. Several franchises interviewed the up-and-coming coordinator for their head coaching vacancies, but ultimately Houston won out for his services. As an NFL player, he played for the Houston Texans from 2006 to 2011 and then for the Philadelphia Eagles from 2012 to 2015. He joined the San Francisco 49ers coaching staff in 2017 and worked his way up to the defensive coordinator job in 2021. After the end of this season, the Houston Texans fired Lovie Smith after just one year. Ryans will be their third Head Coach in three seasons.

As the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers, DeMeco Ryans oversaw one of the best defensive units in the NFL. He quickly rose among the ranks as one of the best young defensive minds in the league. This job was only a matter of time and had he not been hired this year for a job it would have been next year.
