Danai Gurira is the latest addition to Matchbox, an Apple Original Films’ live-action project inspired by the iconic Mattel car toy line. John Cena, Sam Richardson, Teyonah Parris, and Arturo Castro will star alongside Gurira in the “action-packed” film from Extraction Director Sam Hargrave.
“[Matchbox is] an action-packed, globetrotting adventure that centers on a group of childhood friends who must work together to stop an impending worldwide disaster and rediscover their friendship along the way,” an early description of the film reads, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Gurira is no stranger to films and series that break into or are inspired by popular culture. Most notably, she played the role of Michonne in AMC’s The Walking Dead for nearly 100 episodes before transitioning to The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live. Also, she played Okoye in four Marvel films, including Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Gurira’s next project, Matchbox, does not have a release date yet. However, Hargrave and company will reportedly begin shooting this winter in several locales around the world, including Hungary and Slovakia.
