It’s no secret that Portland Trailblazers Point Guard Damian Lillard is one of the biggest boxing fans in basketball. On any given Saturday, he can be seen tweeting about the weekend’s biggest fights and the sport’s biggest stars. Not to mention, he recently starred alongside lightweight contender Ryan Garcia in a Gatorade commercial. Now, he’s using his off-season to empower his boxing fandom.
During last night’s weigh-in, Lillard was spotted backstage with Devin Haney. As he walked in to the room, the NBA All-Star commented on Kambosos Jr.’s inability to make weight during the first go around.
“I didn’t expect this man to miss weight,” he told Haney as the two dapped each other up.
In addition to spending time with Haney during the weigh-in, Lillard also expects the young fighter to walk away with the lightweight undisputed title.
“He can move, and you know, he jab well, he got good feet, he athletic, he tall, long…I think he’s gonna be trouble and I think he’s gonna, he gonna come correct. You know what I mean? I think he gonna come correct and I think he gonna have the best performance of his career, you know. I can see it, I see it coming,” he said during a recent interview with Fight Hype.
“It wouldn’t surprise me if he ain’t get a decision over there either though.”
Haney will have an opportunity to make Lillard’s prediction come true at 9 p.m. ET at Marvel Stadium in Australia on June 4, 2022. The bout will be broadcasted through ESPN.
