When Donnie Nelson addresses the media, take what he says with a grain of salt. The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported the Dallas Mavericks traded for JJ Redick just as the deadline was approaching.

Although the Dallas Mavericks seemingly sat on its hands while a great chunk of the league played hot potato with numerous trade candidates, in the final minutes of the deadline Nelson pulled off a great value trade.
Earlier this month, I predicted Dallas to acquire Redick in a trade. With Tim Hardaway Jr as the best shooter on the Mavericks, the addition of Redick provides Carlisle another wrinkle to his rotation heading into the playoffs.
In addition to acquiring a veteran guard, the Mavericks also obtained a backup center in Nicolo Melli. Dallas didn’t fib about making a drastic trade, but deepening the bench is significant nonetheless.
Sources: Dallas sent James Johnson, Wes Iwundu and a second-round pick to New Orleans to acquire JJ Redick and Nicolo Melli.

On the New Orleans Pelicans’ end, trading Redick for a second-round pick and energetic defensive player in Wes Iwundu bodes well for its young core. Also, the expiring contract worth $16 million helps with shedding salary for the offseason.
The trade is a rare win-win for both parties involved. Look for Redick’s shooting numbers to improve with Luka Doncic as the creator in the Mavericks’ offense.
