Before we get into the sneakers…. Who is Kay Yow?
There is so much to tell. So I am going to try summing it up the best way I can and still pay all due respect to Sandra Kay Yow.
Hall of Fame coach from North Carolina who won more than 700 games while fighting breast cancer for almost two decades (diagnosed in 1987) before losing the battle at age 66. Thats a great start…but trust me there’s more to this legacy so keep reading. Her fight with the disease encouraged those who were afraid while dealing with the same misfortune she had(Kay Yow didn’t look at it as a misfortune). She won more games after her diagnosis with breast cancer than before which right there alone shows the heart and determination she bestowed. Kay Yow has also won an ESPY award, left lasting legacies behind with creating Hoops 4 Hope, and establishing the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.
Below are Sandra Kay Yow’s notable coaching accolades along with a video which is actually titled “Remembering Coach Kay Yow” Check it out.
*737-344 record in 38 years, 34 with The Wolfpack*
*Olympic Gold in 1988*
*4 ACC Tournament Championships*
*20 NCAA Tourney bids and a Final Four trip in 1998*
After that brief and much needed history lesson I believe it is time to get into the sneakers….
