Sorry, he’s not coming back!
No, those aren’t simply words you offer a friend after a rough breakup. That’s the message Chris Evans sent fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) during a recent interview with Brady Langmann of Esquire Magazine.
Anthony Mackie is the focus of Esquire‘s latest print edition. While putting together the featured story about the New Orleans native, the publication reached out to Mackie’s longtime co-star, Chris Evans. During Evans’ conversation with Esquire, he put the rumors about him reprising his role as Steve Rogers in the upcoming film, Avengers: Doomsday, to rest.
“That’s not true, though,” Evans said. “This always happens. I mean, it happens every couple years — ever since Endgame. I’ve just stopped responding to it. Yeah, no — happily retired,” Evans told Esquire.
Instead, Mackie will make the jump from The Falcon to Captain America in the next MCU blockbuster, Captain America: Brave New World. However, Mackie was happy to hear reports about Evans reprising his role in a future film, but Evans quickly shot them down.
“I talked to Chris a few weeks ago, and it wasn’t on the table then,” Mackie told Esquire. “At least, he didn’t tell me it was on the table, because I asked him. I was like, ‘You know, they said they’re bringing everyone back for the movie. Are you coming back?’?He goes, ‘Oh, you know, I’m happily retired.’”
For now, at least, there’s only one Captain America and he’s played by Mackie. His first shot at leading an MCU project, Captain America: Brave New World, will debut in theaters in February.
