More than thirty years ago, nearly 64,000 fans crowded into the Superdome to watch Muhammad Ali become the first man to win the world heavyweight title three times. This year, boxing promoter Eddie Hearn set out to break the attendance record that Ali and Leon Spinks set back in 1978. At first, it appeared to be a lofty goal, but it appears that he may have succeeded.
Eddie Hearn has confirmed that he expects to see nearly 70,000 fans crowd in AT&T Stadium to see Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fight against Billy Joe Saunders on May 8. If his word holds true, it would be the most well-attended sporting event in the United States since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
“It’s one of the biggest events I’ve ever been involved in and this morning, we officially broke the record for the biggest indoor crowd in American boxing history,” Hearn told Fight News.
“We will have 70,000 people in the AT&T Stadium on Saturday night – I am absolutely buzzing for this, I think this could be the best atmosphere we’ve ever seen.”
Alvarez has proven to be a massive draw over the years. His fights against Floyd Mayweather Jr., Gennady Golovkin and Miguel Cotto have all broken the bank. His latest match against Saunders is the latest case study that he is the biggest draw in boxing.
