The New England Patriots announced on Tuesday that they have released quarterback Cam Newton. This means that rookie quarterback Mac Jones will be the Patriots starter under center moving forward. Newton was always likely a bridge quarterback for New England, but he was expected to at least be the starter this season. Newton had a contract that included $3.5 million in guaranteed money. There were incentives in the contract for him if he made the roster as the starter or as a backup.

The Patriots used their first-round pick this year on Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Mac Jones with the expectation he would one day be the starter. Jones and Newton entered the offseason in a quarterback competition. Head Coach Bill Belichick has seen enough to roll with Mac Jones and name him the franchise’s starting quarterback. Jones replaces Cam Newton in an offense that was incredibly stagnant last year for several reasons.
Mac Jones is QB1 in New England.

Last year the Patriots were weighed down by COVID-19 and a lack of playmakers on the roster. Cam Newton was only able to put up 242 completions, 2,657 yards, eight touchdowns, and ten interceptions in 368 passing attempts. He also put up 592 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns on 137 carries. Newton wasn’t ideal last season, but it would be unfair to blame him for the problems in New England. Jones will now begin his career while Newton will look to see if he can continue his with another team.
