Quarterback Cam Newton has signed a five-year, $103.8 million extension with the Carolina Panthers. ESPN’s Adam Schefter broke the story.
Newton will earn $67.6 million in the first three years of the new deal, 66 of which is guaranteed over the life on the contract. Newton was set to earn $14,666,666 in 2015 after Carolina exercised the fifth-year option. Now the new deal will kick in clearing the previous salary.
Newton and his agents Bus Cook, Tony Paige and Chitta Mallik had been working on a deal that involved a higher percentage of guarenteed money with no injuries clauses.Quarterbacks such as San Francisco 49ers‘ Colin Kaepernick and Cincinnati Bengals‘ Andy Dalton have injury clauses tied to their contracts. Ryan Tannehill’s new contract worth 77 million is much smaller than the amount Newton just received.
With an overall record is 30-31-1, 1-2 in the playoffs, Newton will look to take the Panthers to new heights in 2015. After winning his first playoff game a year ago Carolina will look to repeat at Division champs this season. Cam’s 33 rushing touchdowns are the most by any quarterback in his first four seasons.
