What is the song of the summer?
It’s a question that is asked each and every summer between Memorial Day Weekend and Labor Day Week. In 2016, Drake controlled the summer with records like “Work” with Rihanna and “One Dance” with Wizkid. More recently, Wizkid and Tems controlled the day party mix with “Essence.” As for last summer, it was controlled by a Nigerian artist by the name of Burna Boy. From cookouts to car stereos, it was nearly impossible to escape “Last Last.” Sampling “He Wasn’t Man Enough” by Toni Braxton, Burna Boy crafted a lively, energetic record that went platinum in the U.S. and rose to the 44th spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Back yet again, Burna Boy is looking to control the summer yet again. As fans patiently await the release of another “Wavy” snippet, he has kicked off the month of June with another sample-heavy track. Pulling rhythmic inspiration from “Top of the World” by Brandy, he has seemingly attempted to recreate the magic of last summer. Only time will tell if this is the record that can recapture the magic he found in the heat of 2022.
