Quite possibly the best offensive tackle in the NFL over the past decade has decided to call it a career. Joe Thomas spent all 10 seasons of his career with the Cleveland Browns and he seemingly went through it all.
20 quarterbacks played behind Thomas. He was on the field for 10,363 consecutive snaps, before his streak was snapped earlier this season when he missed field time for the first time in his career. The snaps streak spanned 167 consecutive games is believed to be the longest consecutive snaps streak in NFL history.
A torn triceps injury was the final blow for Thomas’ streak and essentially will mark the end of his career despite getting a new contract extension from the team.
Following comes from the Cleveland Browns.
“This was an extremely difficult decision, but the right one for me and my family,” Thomas said. “Playing in the NFL has taken a toll on my body and I can no longer physically compete at the level I need to.”
“From the moment I was drafted, the city embraced me in a way that I could never fully describe. I am proud to call Cleveland home. The loyalty and passion of the fans is unmatched and it was an honor to play in front of them from the past 11 years. I would like to thank all of the coaches, teammates, staff, fans and everyone who has shown me support throughout my career. Even though I will be hanging up my cleats, I will always be a Cleveland Brown.”
Thomas finishes his career as a nine-time All-Pro and will almost undoubtedly be enshrined at the Pro Football Hall of Fame one day.
