The NFL has announced that the week five matchup between the Denver Broncos and New England Patriots has been cancelled.
“The Denver Broncos at New England Patriots game scheduled for Monday, October 12 at 5:00 p.m. ET has been postponed,” the league said in a statement Sunday morning.
“Details on a new game date and time will be announced shortly. Both teams will now have a Week 5 bye. This decision was made to ensure the health and safety of players, coaches and game day personnel and in consultation with medical experts.”
The news comes just hours after an unnamed Patriots player tested positive for the virus. Lately, the New England Patriots have had slight struggles with positive COVID-19 tests. On October 3, reports emerged indicating that quarterback Cam Newton had tested positive for the virus. Since then, 2019 Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore also tested positive.
At this time, it is unclear when the Broncos-Patriots game will take place. However, ESPN’s Adam Schefter has reported that the league may look to postpone the Broncos’ week six matchup against the Dolphins and have Denver and New England play in week six instead.
