This week, the Terminator franchise hit returned to theaters with Terminator: Dark Fate. the new Judgement Day sequel opened in the top spot domestically with $29 million. That certainly doesn’t bode well for the franchise in the States but, its made nearly $125 million worldwide so its not dead in the water quite yet. Though with a reported budget of $185 million, it’s got a ways to go before anyone turns a profit off of it.
In second this week, Todd Phillips’ Joker might finally be done at #1. The DC/Warner Bros. film added another $13.9 million here in the U.S. for a domestic total of nearly $300 million. The ‘R’ rated record-breaker is now up to nearly $950 million globally and will likely hit $1 billion before the end of the year, becoming to first ‘R’ rated film to do so. Phillips initially ruled out a sequel but considering this one’s performance at the box office, I’d say there’s a much higher chance we see Phoenix’s Joker again.
Angelina Jolie comes in third this week as Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil added another $12.1 million to its domestic total. With just under $85 million here in the States, Maleficent‘s latest outing isn’t performing incredibly well. However, thanks to nearly $300 overseas, the film’s made about $384 million worldwide. That’s significantly less than the first film’s final global total of $758 million but, the sequel isn’t doing as terribly as it seemed last week.
And rounding out the top five are Harriet and The Addams Family respectively. In fourth, Harriet opened to $12 million in the U.S., about $2 million over early projections. With a reported budget of just $17 million, Harriet is sitting pretty right now. Finally in fifth, The Addams Family is on the back end of a strong October run with $85 million domestically, $8.4 million of which it earned this weekend. With a reported budget of $40 million and $130 million haul worldwide, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a sequel in the next few years.
