February continues to be fickle as the top five at this weekend’s is full of newcomers, led by Alita: Battle Angel. Robert Rodriguez’ return to the mainstream brought in a healthy $27.8 million. Add in the $8+ million it gained during a mid-week open and its total is up over $36 million domestically.
Coming in second this week, The LEGO Movie 2 continues to underdeliver. It only earned $21.2 million in its second week, good enough to put its total over $62 million stateside. The sequel is way down compared to its predecessor, which earned nearly $70 million in its opening weekend alone.
In third, another newcomer, Isn’t It Romantic brought in just under $15 million. It also had a mid-week open to coincide with Valentines Day, bringing in around $6 million. The Rebel-Wilson-led rom-com has a total opening of $20.4 million. Not bad for a film that likely has a budget somewhere around $15 million.
Finally, rounding out the top five this week are What Men Want and Happy Death Day 2U, respectively. What Men Want added another $10.9 million to its total, which is now up over $36 million. Then, in fifth, Happy Death Day 2U brought in $9.8 million in its opening. Add it’s mid-week opening total and its weekend haul is up to $13.5 million, good enough to cover its low $9 million budget.
