Renowned singer Bobby Caldwell has reportedly passed away. Caldwell’s wife, Mary, shared the news via Twitter on Wednesday.
“Bobby passed away here at home. I held him tight in my arms as he left us. I am forever heartbroken. Thanks to all of you for your many prayers over the years. He had been ‘FLOXED,’ it took his health over the last 6 years and 2 months. Rest with God, my Love,” she tweeted.
Bobby Caldwell was born in the city of New York, but raised in Miami, Florida. Growing up listening to the likes of Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald, he quickly learned how to play the piano and guitar. In his early 20s, he began making his name as a guitar for several different acts, including Little Richard. Ultimately, he caught the attention of TK Records, an independent record label that rose to prominence in the disco era.
Within one year of signing a deal with TK Records, the Miami native released his self-titled album with the hit single, “What You Won’t Do For Love.” The hit single would reach the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 and earn covers from Boyz II Men, Snoh Aalegra and many others. Tupac’s “Do 4 Love” also sampled the singer’s breakout hit.
Over the course of more than 30 years, Caldwell released more than a dozen albums. His musical impact would spread from generation to generation, inspiring new talent around the world. Common, Notorious B.I.G, Lil’ Nas X, John Legend and many others have sampled or covered his tracks.
Caldwell was 71 years old at the time of his passing. Def Pen sends its condolences to his wife, Mary, and his family.
