The “Song of the Summer” race hasn’t kicked off quite yet, but Nicki Minaj may have unveiled the first entry into the mythical contest. Earlier this year, the New York native remixed a classic track that has been a staple in the city for two decades — “Uh Oh” by Lumidee. Putting her own spin on the timeless track, Nicki Minaj has made her way back into the upper echelon of the Billboard Hot 100 while laying a track for others to freestyle over. This time around, New York’s own Billy B has put her own spin on Minaj’s latest hit.
It’s never easy to stand out in a crowded music scene, but Billy B has managed to do that in the city of New York. Her charismatic delivery and gritty bars carry an energy that is always needed in rap. The rising star’s “Red Ruby/Blue Pearl” freestyle showcases all of that and more.
“I let the b*tches get an inch and now, they’re taking a mile. They’re not even making hits, but yet, they’re taking the crown?” she opens up the freestyle.
“It’s Billy B, the stick-up kid. Yeah, I’m shaking ’em down. I’m ’bout to put on for the town because b*tches are playing around.”
As always, New York is at the forefront of cultivating new, exciting acts. From Connie Diamond to Billy B, there are a number of rising acts to be excited about heading into the summer. For now, check out Billy B’s “Red Ruby Freestyle” visualizer below.
