Big Sean will release his sixth studio album, Better Me Than You, on Friday, August 30.
Shortly after sharing a release date for the new album, the Detroit, Michigan native opened up with his fans, explaining the meaning of the project’s title. In short, he let his supporters know that he’s “been having a hard time lately,” but the process has been “worth it.”
“I am a chronic over thinker. I’m a chronic, constant worker and and I’ve been having a hard time lately. Straight up, it’s not been easy,” he explained.
“The whole concept of the album is like Better Me Than You, so when you go through your shit, it’s like you the one who can handle it.”
Better Me Than You is the follow-up to Detroit II, which as released during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Similar to his forthcoming release, Detroit II provided Big Sean a platform to talk openly about his mental health struggles. More specifically, he used a portion of his verse on “Deep Reverence” to talk about working through suicidal thoughts.
“Damn, I’ve realized all of my setbacks were inside of me. In high school, I learned [about] chemistry [and] biology, but not how to cope with anxiety or how I could feel like I’m by myself on an island with depression on all sides of me [and] a Glock 17 right on the side of me,” he raps.
“Look, I ain’t think I had the thought of suicide in me until life showed me all these different sides of me. Too many times, I thought the reaper was [waiting] outside for me.”
Leading up to the release of Better Me Than You, the former G.O.O.D Music star has released four singles — “Precision,” “Yes,” “On Up,” and “Together Forever.” In addition, he’s appeared on “Shut Up” with Jessie Reyez and “Tobey” with Eminem. However, he has not yet released the track list for the project.
