It will be a Barbie Christmas on MAX, formerly known as HBO Max. Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, will be available to MAX subscribers beginning Friday, December 15. The film will be available in its original format as well as an American Sign Language edition.
Premiering worldwide in July, Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig, is the year’s most commercially successful film. On a budget of less than $150 million, the film reportedly generated $1.4 billion at the box office worldwide. Furthermore, it is also Warner Bros.’ most commercially successful film, surpassing films such as Dark Knight, Dark Knight Rises, Aquaman, Joker and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II.
In addition to its commercial success, Barbie was also a hit among critics. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the film scored in the 88th percentile among critics and 83rd percentile among fans.
“One of the best films of the year in cinematographic terms, probably the best comedy that we have seen in a long time, and an extraordinarily entertaining product that promotes the value of searching for a more cohesive society,” Sergio Burstein of The Los Angeles Times wrote.
Despite its fanfare, Margot Robbie has already squashed rumors of a sequel.
“We didn’t build it to be a trilogy or something,” Robbie said.
“Greta put everything into this movie, so I can’t imagine what would be next.”
For now, fans will have to rewatch the original, which will be available on MAX beginning December 15, 2023.
