HBO Max has cut down South Side after three seasons. The decision to cancel the scripted comedy series arrives two months after season three debuted on the streaming platform.
“While HBO Max will not be moving forward with a fourth season of South Side, we are so proud of the rich world Bashir Salahuddin, Diallo Riddle and Sultan Salahuddin created,” a spokesperson for HBO Max told Deadline.
“We thank them and Michael Blieden, Tony Hernandez, the supremely talented cast and crew and our partners at MTV Entertainment Studios. For three seasons, this beloved series balanced cutting, hyperlocal social commentary about life on the South Side of Chicago with silly, sometimes zany humor. The result was a wholly unique, ambitious, and fearless comedy that could speak to everyone living the American dream.”
Led by Bashir Salahuddin and Diallo Riddle, the series offers a comedic look at life in south side Chicago through the lens of two friends working at Rent-T-Own. Despite its cancelation, South Side earned great reviews in its third season.
“I’m so glad this show got a third season,” Nina Metz of Chicago Tribune said.
“South Side is the kind of second-by-second hilarious where seemingly every line is telling its own joke. And at a breezy 30 minutes, you can fill out the hour laughing,” Johnny Loftus of Decider added.
