The New York Yankees have reportedly agreed to a contract extension with closer Aroldis Chapman. Following the conclusion of the New York Yankees postseason run, Chapman had to decide to opt-in or opt-out of his player option. Chapman chose to opt-out and work out an extension to stay with the New York Yankees. The new contract nullifies Chapman’s remaining two years on the contract and sets him up with a new three-year, $48 million contract with the Yankees.

Chapman has spent the last three seasons with the Yankees where he has been their closer. Over the last three years, he had a 190.0 innings pitched for the Yankees, totaling 111 saves. He has posted a 2.51 ERA, a 1.06 WHIP, and 291 strikeouts for the Yankees as their closer. Chapman will continue to be the Yankees backend guy for the next three seasons. The Yankees who were knocked out in the 2019 ALCS by the Houston Astros, will look to get back to the postseason again this season.
After this new contract, Chapman’s new AAV will be $16 million after the extension which brings his contract value from two years at $30 million up to three years at $48 million. The Yankees are looking to keep their pitching staff strong so they can be competitive again in the 2020 regular season. The Yankees injury-stricken offseason gets a little positive boost after bringing back Chapman.
