The fall slate of championship fights is coming together quite nicely. Canelo Alvarez and Caleb Plant will fight for super middleweight supremacy in Las Vegas, Deontay Wilder will attempt to regain his heavyweight title in October and Shakur Stevenson will likely fight for his second title against Jamel Herring. Joining the growing list of fall fights, it appears that Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk have found a venue for their September heavyweight title fight. The two will face off on September 25 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.
“Olympic gold vs. Olympic gold, unified world heavyweight champion vs. undisputed cruiserweight world champion this one has it all and I can’t wait to stage this huge event in front of over 60,000 at the stunning Tottenham Hotspur Stadium,” promoter Eddie Hearn told ESPN about the upcoming matchup.
If the event is able to take place in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Joshua-Usyk will draw the largest crowd for a boxing event in the U.K. since Regis Prograis fought Josh Taylor at the O2 Arena in October 2019.
“We are two Olympic hold medallists who have fought our way to the top and never avoided challenges. The stadium is exceptional, the atmosphere will be electric, I’m honoured to be the first person to fight in such an awe inspiring venue,” Joshua added.
“The stage is set and I am ready to handle business.”
