The Chicago Bears have claimed former Las Vegas Raiders offensive lineman Alex Leatherwood off waivers. On Tuesday the Las Vegas Raiders waived the former first-round pick and he became subject to the NFL waiver process. Now he will get a fresh start on the Chicago Bears who could use some help on the offensive line. Leatherwood was the 17th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft after playing college football with the Alabama Crimson Tide.

The day after NFL team’s cut their rosters to 53 men, the waiver process allows younger players to be added to new teams that can use them. While Alex Leatherwood has struggled since being drafted, the Chicago Bears offensive line isn’t exactly a top NFL unit. They can afford to take a chance on a former first-round pick that hasn’t quite worked out in the NFL so far in his career. He is still a young player that could turn things around on a new roster. Along with Leatherwood the Chicago Bears also claimed five other players off waivers.

The Chicago Bears are not projected to be a great team this year and are facing an uphill battle when rebuilding. Taking a chance on players like Alex Leatherwood is exactly what the team needs to do this season. Perhaps it will work out well for both sides moving forward.
