This year, ABC will celebrate the fifth anniversary of its Kenya Barris led sitcom, Black-ish. Over the course of its five season run, the ABC comedy has carved out a place in the ethos of pop culture. As time goes on, the show begins to expand into spin-offs such as Grown-ish. In the near future, the show could spawn another spin-off that is being described as the sitcom’s prequel.
According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, ABC has opened up about the development of an upcoming Black-ish episode starring a young Rainbow Johnson that could turn into a Black-ish prequel if it is well received. The report states, “The idea will be filmed in March as an episode of the flagship comedy. Casting has yet to begin and deals with writers are still being finalized.” The report also states, “Should the casting and episode come in well, ABC would then consider its options moving forward. An air date for the episode has not yet been determined.”
ABC currently runs a number of spin-off programs including Grey’s Anatomy spin-off, Station 19, and The Goldbergs‘ spin-off, Schooled. It is unclear if Barris will continue to work with ABC Studios on the new series as he has recently signed a deal with Netflix.
