
The National Portrait Gallery has announced that Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Anthony Fauci, José Andrés, Clive Davis and Ava DuVernay will receive the annual Portrait of a Nation Award. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the award “recognizes extraordinary individuals who have made transformative contributions to the United States and its people across numerous fields of endeavor, ranging from the arts and sciences to sports and humanitarianism.” Past recipients of the award include Ana Wintour, Jeffrey Bezos, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Aretha Franklin and Spike Lee.
“These honorees are innovators in their respective disciplines and advocates for social causes who use their voices to care for and lift up others,” National Portrait Gallery Director Kim Sajet said in a press release.
“The Portrait of a Nation Award reminds us that history is living and the choices people make have an impact on the nation’s legacy.”
Portraits of the award’s recipients will be available at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. from November 10, 2022 through October 22, 2023. Additionally, a gala will be held for award recipients on November 12, 2022.
