2018 NBA Draft Recap: Deandre Ayton Goes First, Mavs Acquire Luka Doncic

After weeks, even months, of speculation and intrigue, the 2018 NBA Draft delivered answers – and surprises.

In a shocking early twist, the Atlanta Hawks traded the third overall pick to the Dallas Mavericks for the fifth overall pick and a protected future first-rounder. Atlanta, picking for Dallas, selected Luka Doncic, the decorated European star. The Mavericks picked Oklahoma point guard Trae Young in a high-profile trade.

The Charlotte Hornets and the Los Angeles Clippers provided the next trade, swapping the 11 and 12 selections. Los Angeles ends up with point guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander while the Hornets gent forward Miles Bridges. The Clippers had back to back picks after the Blake Griffin trade and were able to get their preferred point guard.

Phoenix found themselves right back in the spotlight and made a trade with the Philadelphia 76ers. The Suns acquired Mikal Bridges in exchange for the rights to Zhaire Smith. Bridges played close to home at Villanova an his mother works for the Sixers, which makes this trade sting a little bit more than others. Phoenix was able to have fun with it though.

Those were some nice highlights @sixers…
