Grown-ish star Yara Shahidi is set to become the first Black woman to play the role of Tinker Bell. Shahidi will star alongside Jude Law in the upcoming Disney film, Peter Pan and Wendy. Law will play the role of Captain Hook, Alexander Molony will play the role of Peter Pan and Ever Anderson will step into the role of Wendy. Behind the scenes, David Lowery will direct, Toby Halbrooks will write the script and Jim Whitaker will produce.
Shahidi will continue the trend of Black women breaking barriers at Disney. Last summer, Disney announced that fellow Grown-ish star Halle Bailey will be the first Black woman to play the role of Ariel in the upcoming Little Mermaid reboot. Not to mention, Bailey’s mentor, Beyoncé, voiced the role of Nala in the latest Lion King film. She also curated the film’s soundtrack which featured Childish Gambino, Kendrick Lamar, Pharrell and her husband, Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter.
As of now, there is no word as to when Peter Pan and Wendy will hit the big screen. With a number of films being pushed back at Disney, it could be a while until we see this film in theaters. Still, it will be well worth the wait.
