EST Gee and 42 Dugg are not the only artists releasing a joint project tonight. In somewhat surprising fashion, producer Greg Gillis, better known as Girl Talk, has orchestrated a joint project featuring Wiz Khalifa, Smoke DZA and Big K.R.I.T. The highly-anticipated project is led by their latest single, “Ain’t No Fun.” Built in memory of Snoop Dogg’s classic 1993 track, “Ain’t No Fun” isn’t as explicit, but it’s just as celebratory.
“[The song] is a flip on the concept of Snoop’s original, kind of from the female perspective of the titular line. I wanted to keep the production diverse throughout the project, while still maintaining a cohesive feel,” Girl Talk told Stereogum.
“This beat stands out in the context of the album because it doesn’t have a sample and uses a more minimal style. But I thought that with some of the specific sound design and the overall energy, it really connected to the project as a whole.”
“Ain’t No Fun” is somewhat of a precursor of what is to come. While every track isn’t as celebratory, it does set the tone for the production and themes that permeate throughout much of the project. For example, a track like “How The Story Goes” isn’t as celebratory, but it honors legendary Hip-Hop tracks, sounds and production that made Hip-Hop what it is today.
Smoke DZA, Big K.R.I.T, Wiz Khalifa and Girl Talk all came up in what has been dubbed the “Blog Era,” but the group has evolved since the early 2010s. As Wiz Khalifa puts it, “the blog era was just the beginning.” Full Court Press showcases how far each artist has come over the last week while giving fans a bit of what they loved during the era of Limewire and DatPiff.
