HBO has waived its two-season portrayal of the “Showtime” Los Angeles Lakers known as Winning Time.
“When you give it everything you’ve got, you can have no regrets. I hope you enjoy the last episode of [Winning Time]. I am sure I will do many more hours of TV and hopefully many features in my future, but I can say that at this moment in time, I am most proud of the work we did on this masterful show,” the show’s executive producer, Salli Richardson Whitfield, wrote on Instagram.
“[For] 9.5 years, [w]e made the show of my dreams. That wasn’t the ending we hoped for but very grateful to everyone who watched and Jeff Pearlman for trusting me with his genius book,” the show’s co-creator, Jim Hecht, added.
The decision to end the series after two season is reportedly driven by a drop in viewership. According to a report from Deadline, the show’s season two premiere drew 629,000 total viewers across Max and linear telecasts. In comparison, the show’s debut drew 901,000 viewers across all platforms.
“They didn’t promote the second season at all,” KTLA’s Sam Rubin said.
“That’s a great show and shouldn’t have gone away in that fashion.”
