Tonight, the New York Yankees will return to the Bronx for a 7:05 p.m. EST showdown with the Seattle Mariners. On the mound, George Kirby will go toe-to-toe with Gerrit Cole, but they may be overshadowed by a pitcher making his debut. NBA prospect Victor Wembanyama is set to throw the opening pitch.
“We look forward to welcoming Victor Wembanyama to The Stadium tonight to deliver the ceremonial 1st pitch,” the Yankees tweeted.
Wembanyama has made his way to the Big Apple in preparation for the 2023 NBA Draft. The 7’2 prospect is expected to be selected overall by Greg Popovich and the San Antonio Spurs. Following in the footsteps of previous San Antonio big men like David Robinson and Tim Duncan, the French teenager enters the league as one of the most high-profile prospects in recent memory. Giannis Antetokounmpo, Stephen Curry, LeBron James and Kevin Durant are just a few of the NBA stars to hype up the projected number one overall pick.
“He is incredible,” Antetokounmpo said.
“That type of talent and skill just puts a smile on your face if you play basketball,” Durant noted.
Wembanyama will be front and center at the Barclays Center on Thursday when the 2023 NBA Draft begins.
