The Washington football franchise will formally announce that it is changing its name on Monday according to multiple sources.
The name change is likely the result of corporate pressure from several major sponsors. Most notably, FedEx, who have the naming rights to the team’s stadium, put pressure on the team to change its name. Elsewhere, brands like Amazon and Nike have opted to stop selling the team’s merchandise until the name is changed.
Mounting pressure led to the franchise announcing that the team’s name would undergo a thorough review. On July 3, 2020, team owner Daniel Snyder and company issued a statement regarding the matter.
“In light of recent events around our country and feedback from our community, the Washington Redskins are announcing the team will undergo a thorough review of (its) name,” the team stated.
“This review formalizes the initial discussions the team has been having with the league in recent weeks,” the statement continued.
Early favorites for the team’s name include the Warriors and Redtails. While the franchise is expected to announce a name change will take place, it is unlikely that a new name and logo will be unveiled today.
