Few emerging artists were able to break onto the global scene quite like Tyla did in 2023. The South African singer rose to prominence with the success of her lead single, “Water.” The track rose to number ten on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned praise from Jack Harlow, Normani and several other stars. Even iconic entertainer Janet Jackson began performing a mashup of “Water” and “What Have You Done For Me Lately” during her U.S. Tour.
“I was like, ‘What the heck!’ And then she DM’d me and she was like, ‘Congratulations, stay blessed’,” Tyla told Mark Savage of BBC.
“I was just star-struck. I couldn’t believe Janet Jackson took the time to even say anything, you know? It’s crazy.”
Moving into the new year, fans are eager to see what the South African songstress has in store for her debut album. In Tyla’s words, the people “are not ready” for what she has in store.
“I feel like people are going to be so surprised, like, ‘Where did this girl come from?’,” she continued.
“So I’m very excited because when I listen back to the album, I’m like, the people are not ready!”
