Music was, is and will always be a playground for creative minds to play, explore and express themselves. Genres were created in an effort to classify different sounds and simplify things for some listeners. However, genres should never be designed to confine an artist to one sound or feeling. No artist appears to understand this quite like Tkay Maidza from Australia.
Throughout her Last Year Was Weird series, Tkay Maidza bounced around from R&B to Rap to Pop and beyond. Along the way, her unique personality and signature delivery shined time and time again. One of the stand-out tracks from her first three Last Year Was Weird releases was a more laid-back, heartfelt track called “Cashmere.” Produced by Don Farber, the track showcases Tkay Maidza’s vocal ability as she sings about cutting ties with the past and moving on to the future no matter how hard that may be at times.
“You ain’t safe until you’ve lived your life with no fear/You can’t live until we cry every beautiful tear/It ain’t easy ’til it goes ‘specially when you’re sinful/Camouflage my darkest thoughts, disconnecting the ties,” she sings.
“Do what you gotta do, deep in a dark web/Things we find in there shouldn’t be seen by anyone/Do what you gotta do, there’s not a lot in me left.”
Tkay Maidza’s brand will only continue to grow as the year goes on. With performances in Las Vegas, Brooklyn and Los Angeles set for the fall, the sky is the limit for the rising artist. Check out her live performance of “Cashmere” below.
