There is a ton of excitement surrounding the Minnesota Timberwolves coming into the 2015-16 season and for good reason.
They have a great young core of talented players in Andrew Wiggins, Ricky Rubio, Zach LaVine, Shabazz Muhammad and Gorgui Dieng coupled with the two rookies in Karl-Anthony Towns and Tyus Jones along with the returning and incoming veterans like Kevin Garnett, Nikola Pekovic, Andre Miller and Kevin Martin are all expected to play a role in this teams success and growth.
Seemingly, for one reason or another, when good news comes, bad news follows it.
Unfortunately, the T-Wolves and NBA family has been hit with some sobering news. The Wolves president of basketball operations and head coach, Flip Saunders, has been diagnosed with cancer.
Following from an official Minnesota Timberwolves press release.
Timberwolves President of Basketball Operations and Head Coach Flip Saunders today announced that he has been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment for what his doctors called a “very treatable and curable form of cancer.”
The initial diagnosis came eight weeks ago during an examination by Timberwolves Vice President of Team Medical Services Sheldon Burns. Saunders immediately started the treatment process with a medical team at Mayo Clinic.
“I am taking it step by step and day by day to understand how to best manage this process,” said Saunders, who has attended to all of his team duties throughout the period of diagnosis and treatment.
“I want to thank Dr. Burns as well as my medical team at Mayo Clinic for their hard work in diagnosing my situation and creating a plan to help me achieve a cancer-free outcome. I am attacking this with the same passion I do everything in my life, knowing this is a serious issue. I also know that God has prepared me to fight this battle.”
Saunders will continue uninterrupted with his duties as Timberwolves’ President of Basketball Operations and Head Coach.
It’s good to hear Saunders will be continuing his duties with the team and he is undergoing treatments at this time. Everyone here at Def Pen Radio wishes Saunders all the best in his recovery. Our prayers and well wishes go out to Flip, the Saunders family and his Minnesota Timberwolves family.
