Fans at CinemaCon were greeted with a surprise on Wednesday as Warner Bros. unveiled the first look at The Matrix: Resurrection. In the short first-look, a long-haired Keanu Reeves appears to be talking with his therapist, Neil Patrick Harris. As their conversation develops, it becomes clear that Reeves’ Neo is a regular blue pill-taker who remembers little about the matrix.
“Am I crazy?” he asks.
“We don’t use that word in here,” he asks.
Later on, it becomes increasingly clear that he has been associated with his past life. Neo walks into a coffee shop where his former lover, Trinity, played by Carrie-Anne Moss, doesn’t seem to remember him.
“Have we met?” Moss asks.
Closing out the trailer, Reeves begins looking at his bathroom as he struggles to figure out what is wrong. Finally, he pours out all of his blue pills and an older vision of himself appears in the mirror. Then, a blue-haired woman shows up and tells him to follow her if he wishes to figure out what’s going on. From then on, Neo returns in full force with fight scenes along with newcomer, Candyman star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.
“After all these years to be going back to where it all started…back to the Matrix,” newcomer Jonathan Groff as the screen faded to black.
The Matrix: Resurrection is set to debut in theaters on December 22. An official trailer will be released in the coming weeks.
