It’s safe to say that the Halle Bailey-led, live-action edition of Disney’s The Little Mermaid is a success. Not only did it perform well at the box office, but it also earned rave reviews from fans and critics alike.
“My heart is so full right now. This movie is [a] prime example of how to take the original material and add a whole new level of nuance without forgetting what made it special in the first place. I’m so happy,” one viewer tweeted.
“[I] just got out of The Little Mermaid and can say that I absolutely loved it! And I really enjoyed some of the new scenes and the new songs! Had some laughs and shed a few tears. And of course, Halle Bailey did such a phenomenal job portraying such a beloved princess,” another viewer added.
If the cast has anything to say about it, The Little Mermaid and its cast of live-action characters will return for another film. Recently, Javier Bardem, who played the role of King Triton, said that he’d like the story to branch off into a spinoff film led by Ursula, played by Melissa McCarthy.
“I had a moment where [Melissa] was delivering some pretty heavy lines and they made my spine [shiver],” Bardem told The Hollywood Reporter.
“I felt the energy. So I didn’t see her Ursula until that moment, but I knew then that she had created a unique and iconic Ursula in this movie. She’s brought everything that you can ask for and imagine. So I need an Ursula spinoff, and since our characters are siblings, I want to have one scene with her while having dinner.”
