Today is the day! Tonight, ESPN and Netflix will air the first two episodes of the highly anticipated documentary, The Last Dance. Prior to the documentary’s debut, ESPN has built up anticipation by releasing the first five minutes of the first episode. In those five minutes, viewers get a taste of what’s to come over the next few weeks.
In addition to the preview, exeuctive producer Mike Tollin caught up with The Ringer‘s Bill Simmons to talk about the ten-part special. During that interview, Tollin provided an inside peak into development of the finale of The Last Dance. Most notably, he spoke to the chaos caused by the coronavirus and the clamor to move the documentary’s release up two months to the month of April.
“We’re still not done [with] the last episode. We will still be working on [episode] ten after [episodes] seven and eight air in three weeks,” he said.
The Last Dance was originally scheduled to air immediately following the 2020 NBA Finals in June. With the 2019-2020 NBA season and playoffs postponed indefinitely, ESPN, Netflix and the NBA pushed to release the documentary earlier. As a result, The Last Dance will debut tonight at 9 p.m. on ESPN in the United States and on Netflix internationally.
