The CW’s Arrowverse may be getting a lot bigger in the Fall. A pilot for a possible Batwoman series has officially been ordered by the network. David Nutter will direct the episode with Caroline Dries attached to pen the script. Dries will executive produce, alongside Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Geoff Johns.
Batwoman aka Katherine Kane made her on-screen debut late last year in the annual Arrowverse crossover event. Ruby Rose portrayed the character and would reprise her role for the series. Rose’s casting was met with controversy as many ‘die-hard’ fans were so negative on social media that the actress left Twitter due to the backlash.
In the crossover event, titled ‘Elseworlds,’ Rose won over many of those fans as her performance garnered near-universal praise. Since the airing of those episodes, many fans have come around on the idea of a solo Batwoman series. Even most of Rose’s critics have begun to champion a series led by the actress. With the series already in development, The CW has fast-tracked it after the fan response to the Rose’s Batwoman.
The series would likely bring in a lot of popular Batman villains, with Penguin, Clayface, Mr. Freeze, and Riddler already being name-dropped in the crossover episodes. It’s also possible Batwoman could bring a small-screen iteration of the caped crusader, especially considering the DCEU’s troubles. But that wouldn’t be the show’s biggest landmark. Should it reach series, Batwoman would be the first to feature a gay superhero in the lead role.
Don’t expect any such announcement for a few months though, as networks don’t usually decide these things until May.
