Undisputed welterweight champion Terence Crawford is making his media rounds after defeating Errol Spence Jr. on Saturday, July 29 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. On Thursday, he made appearances on numerous programs, including The Dan LeBatard Show and The Odd Couple. During an interview with Hot 97’s Ebro and Peter Rosenberg, the Omaha, Nebraska native was asked about the possibility of fighting WBA “Regular” Lightweight Champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis.
“Tank is at a lower weight class than me. He’s at 135 pounds [and] I’m at 147 pounds. I would never [make 135 pounds now]. Nah, I wouldn’t say that it’ll happen,” Crawford answered.
Gervonta “Tank” Davis primarily campaigns at lightweight, but has climbed up to the 140-pound division once in his career for a fight with Mario Barrios. Weight may be an issue in potentially making a fight between the two, but Davis hasn’t completely shot down the idea. In March, Davis said that he’d put Crawford “to sleep” if they ever fought.
“At 147? I tap that chin and you know he’s going to sleep. [He’s] got no chance — round six,” Davis said.
In response, Crawford offered a similar response. From his point of view, he does not believe Crawford would jump to the 147-pound division.
“When you look at all the great fighters, they get called out by everybody from different weight classes. So it’s nothing that I’m surprised about,” he told Fight Hype.
“Everybody says what they’re going to do, but ‘Tank’ is in his weight class for a reason. I don’t see him coming up to 147 to face me any time soon.”
