Taika Waititi has reportedly signed on to direct the next Star Wars film. Waititi will also co-write the script alongside 1917‘s Krysty Wilson-Cairns. In addition, Disney and LucasFilms have announced that an untitled Star Wars television series is in the works.
News of Waititi’s involvement first surfaced in January after he directed the season finale of the Disney+ series, The Mandalorian. At first, the sought after director was reluctant to give any credence to the rumors.
“Are there discussions about the Star Wars film? Like, yeah, I discussed with my friends in 1996 how cool ‘Star Wars’ was,” he told reporters.
“I think people see me hanging out with people, especially with Star Wars, and think I’m having some big discussions about it. I would f*cking love to.…If it was right. I would want to do any kind of movie if it made sense, and if it felt not like career suicide,” he continued.
In addition to his Star Wars project, Waititi is also working with Disney on Thor: Love and Thunder. Waititi is co-writing the script with Someone Great‘s Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. The film is set to hit theaters in 2022.
Disney has set December 2022 as the target date for the next Star Wars film.
