CBS is blowing the doors off Hall H with Star Trek news today. During a three-hour panel marathon, details of both Star Trek: Discovery season 3 and the upcoming Star Trek: Picard were revealed. Though diehard Trekkers may be more interested in those two series, CBS also revealed a lot more about Star Trek: Lower Decks, the intriguing new animated series coming to CBS All-Access.
Sadly, the series didn’t receive a trailer or teaser as the production team isn’t ready for all that yet. However, we did get a look at a few characters, as well as a short synopsis, and the full cast. Star Trek: Lower Decks takes place in the year 2380. Canonically, this falls just after the ending of Star Trek: Nemesis when, according to series co-creator Mike McMahan, “Voyager is still around.” Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noel Wells, and Eugene Cordero star as the lower deck ‘Ensigns’ in the series.
Newsome and Quaid will play opposite each other as Newsome’s Ensign Mariner is adventurous and reckless, much to the chagrin of Quaid’s Ensign Boimler. Wells will voice Ensign Tendi, a new Starfleet enlistee whose first day on the ship will apparently take center stage in the show’s pilot. Rounding out the lower deck crew is Cordero as Ensign Rutherford, a pretty inept cyborg engineer. Though the series will mainly focus on the lower deck Ensigns, there will be a classic bridge crew portrayed by Jerry O’Connell, Fred Tatasciore, Gillian Vigman, and Dawnn Lewis. According to McMahan, the bridge considers Lower Decks their show, so that should produce some pretty fun shenanigans.

Star Trek: Lower Decks received an immediate two-season order. The show’s first season will consist of 10 episodes, landing on CBS All-Access sometime in 2020.
