This summer, millions of people around the world will celebrate 50 years of Hip-Hop. From fashion to dance, the culture of Hip-Hop has shifted the world in ways that were previously thought to be unfathomable. As the grand celebration on 1520 Sedgwick Avenue nears, a number of journalists, publications and streaming outlets have put together lists sparking debate about the greatest songs, artists, albums, etc. in the culture’s history. This week, Spotify has unveiled its list of the greatest beats of all time.
Spotify has crowned “Still D.R.E” by Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg as the greatest beat in Hip-Hop’s grand history. Running not far behind, “Shook Ones Pt. II” by Mobb Deep, “Grindin” by Clipse, “Who Shot Ya?” by The Notorious B.I.G and “A Milli” by Lil’ Wayne round out the top 50. Elsewhere, the list celebrates the production of “Power” by Kanye West, “Throw Some D’s” by Rich Boy and “Mask Off” by Future. Spotify says that the list considered the following criteria when compiling this list: production value, replay value, originality, innovation, influence and overall impact.
Spotify’s list of the 50 greatest beats in Hip-Hop is just the start of what is to come. According to a press release, the streaming platform will be releasing lists throughout May, June, July and August.
