Spike Lee has been tapped to lead ESPN’s multipart documentary series exploring the life and career of former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
“Kaepernick, who has never given a full, first-person account of his journey, is collaborating closely with Lee who plans to use extensive new interviews and a vast never-before-seen archive to help Kaepernick tell his story from his perspective,” a press release from ESPN reads.
The project was initially announced in July 2020 as part of a multiyear deal that Kaepernick signed with ESPN. At the time of the announcement, no director was attached to the project. However, Jemele Hill, Libby Geist, Kevin Merida and Connor Schell were listed as executive producers.
“I am excited to announce this historic partnership with Disney across all of its platforms to elevate Black and Brown directors, creators, storytellers, and producers, and to inspire the youth with compelling and authentic perspectives,” Kaepernick stated in a press release.
“I look forward to sharing the docuseries on my life story, in addition to many other culturally impactful projects we are developing.”
After signing a deal with ESPN, Kaepernick went on to launch his very own Netflix series with Jemele Hill while publishing together two books. Now, he will lead his Know Your Rights Camp into a new era and debut his highly-anticipated ESPN project.
