Move over Shake It Up, there’s a new Disney Channel series centered around hip-hop dance in town. According to Variety, Shook is a new short-form hip-hop Disney Channel series from the Duplass brothers that premieres next month. Shook will also be Disney Channel’s first series made exclusively for YouTube.
Sofia Wylie is set to star in the series as Mia, a 15-year old girl who dreams of becoming a professional dancer. Obligations to help her younger sister and single mother prevent her from chasing that dream. However, her best friend introduces her to the world of street dance and after some coaxing, she begins expressing her true self.
Shook is produced, surprisingly, by the Duplass brothers through their DBP Donut banner. Mark Duplass recently released a statement regarding the series. “It’s not every day that Disney asks you to partner on a diverse, fun, avant-garde dance series. Actually, this may never happen again, so we’re enjoying it while it lasts.”
Wylie stars in the series alongside Somali Rose and LeShay Tomlinson. Sydney Sepulveda, Wayne Mackins, Jenna Alvarez, and Caroline Harris are also set to appear in the series.
Shook will premiere on Disney Channel’s YouTube page next month, on September 28th.
