Sing Sing will return to theaters on Sunday, January 17, 2025.
Starring Colman Domingo and Clarence Maclin, the feature film follows the story of Divine G, an inmate convicted of a crime he didn’t commit. While incarcerated, he finds purpose through acting and support in a small theater group.
“Has as a case for best film of the year. It’s poignant and human. Colman Domingo delivers a career-best performance, but the stunning ensemble acting by the cast of formally incarcerated men, led by Clarence Maclin, truly makes the film transformative,” Sheeraz Farooqi of Cinema Debate said.
“I went into Sing Sing not knowing that many of the actors had been incarcerated and were playing variations on themselves… the performances felt different. Not just powerful and impressive, but fueled by a fire that comes from real life experiences,” added Beth Accomando of KPBS.org.
The A24 film debuted in the United States on July 12, 2024, earning $3.1 million at the box office. Since its launch, the film has been honored by the Chicago Film Critics Association, National Board of Review, Gotham Awards, Miami Film Festival and several other organizations. Heading into awards season, critics believe it has a chance to earn Best Picture honors at the Academy Awards.
“Those who have been paying attention to this year’s recently launched Gold Derby Oscar predictions may have noticed the movie Sing Sing mentioned in a number of categories, most notably, as the current front-runner for Best Picture,” Edward Douglas of Golden Derby wrote.
“As of this writing more than 1,400 people have predicted Sing Sing to be nominated for Best Picture, and more than 800 have predicted it to win.”
