The LSU Tigers are losing forward Shareef O’Neal to the Transfer Portal this offseason. This comes weeks after the news that Head Coach Will Wade was fired from the program. He is of course the son of NBA and LSU Tigers legend Shaquille O’Neal. This will be the second time he transferred from a program in his college career. He began his college career with the UCLA Bruins before heading to the LSU Tigers. His college career didn’t quite take off after having to deal with a serious heart condition.

Shareef O’Neal spent this past season, his junior year, with the Tigers and averaged 2.9 points and 2.1 rebounds per game in 9.2 minutes. He shot 50 percent from the field and 14.3 percent from the three-point line. While his case is somewhat murky with a previous transfer and a coach being fired it is currently unclear if he will gave to sit out for a year before competing again. Considering the limited minutes, a change of scenery may be the best for the former top-rated four-star recruit.

The decision to transfer is always a difficult one, but transferring away from the school where your parent is effectively a folklore has to be difficult. That being said it was likely for the best with an unknown Head Coach coming in and an already limited role with the program. Hopefully, this change will help him become the player he was meant to be on the court moving forward. We here at Def Pen Sports wish him the best in doing just that.
