WBO Junior Lightweight Champion Jamel Herring is set to fight interim WBO Junior Lightweight Champion Shakur Stevenson in Atlanta, Georgia at the State Farm Arena on October 23. The fight will be promoted by Top Rank and air on ESPN. Both fighters are expected to earn $1.5 million for their talents, a career-high payday for both.
All signs have pointed toward this bout for the last few months. With both Herring and Stevenson fighting under the Top Rank umbrella, negotiations have flowed fairly easily. Not to mention, the two have worked together in the Terence Crawford camp. Given their connections, the two have gone back and forth about the upcoming bout.
“I told [Stevenson] … that when the fight happens, I know it will be his toughest fight,” Herring said.
“I said it to his face: ‘I’m going to be your biggest fight, your biggest test.'”
Despite Herring’s statements, Stevenson remains confident that he’ll come out on top.
“I go fight Jamel Herring next and go beat him and then go beat Oscar Valdez. They’ll be saying I’m the best young fighter and put me on the pound-for-pound list,” he said.
Jamel Herring and Shakur Stevenson have both signed the contracts for their junior lightweight title fight on ESPN and ESPN+, sources told @MikeCoppinger.
