Three weeks into the 2022-2023 college football season, the Rutgers University Scarlet Knights had reason to be optimistic about the fall. With three consecutive wins under their belt, the Scarlet Knights headed into a conference showdown with the Iowa Hawkeyes. The Scarlet Knights suffered a 17-point defeat at the hands of the Hawkeyes and struggled against the Ohio State Buckeyes one week later. This past weekend, fans believed that the team would get back on track against the lackluster Nebraska Cornhuskers. While the Scarlet Knights were able to hold the Cornhuskers to 14 points, the offense struggled to move the ball and managed only to put up 13 points. As a result, Greg Schiano has decided to let go of offensive coordinator Sean Gleeson.
“This was a difficult decision, but I believe it is in the best interest of our program to make a change at offensive coordinator,” Schiano said.
“I want to thank Sean for his hard work and wish he and his family all the best in their future endeavors.”
Under Gleeson’s leadership, the Scarlet Knights ranked 108th in total offense and 104th in scoring offense. During last weekend’s game against the Cornhuskers, Rutgers was unable to score in the second half. Rutgers ultimately finished the game with three turnovers while going 4-16 on third down.
Rutgers will have added time to prepare for the post-Gleeson era. The Scarlet Knights will enjoy a bye week before playing the Indiana Hoosiers at home on October 22.
